About the Council

The Maya-Mam Saq Tx’otx’ Council is an Indigenous council situated in the Huehuetenango department of Guatemala, and it forms part of Council of the Maya-Mam Nation. The Maya-Mam Saq Tx’otx’ Council is the political body to be consulted to resolve issues regarding programs, projects, and policies in the region. Over the years, the Maya-Mam Saq Tx’otx’ Council has tirelessly dedicated itself to the defense of territory.

Collaboration

The pueblo Mam's socio-political struggles in defense of territory are articulated in various socio-political communiqués of the Maya-Mam Saq Tx’otx’ Council. This project is a form of "community-engaged scholarship" between the Maya-Mam Saq Tx'otx' Council and Dr. Jeffrey A. Gardner (Sociologist of Sam Houston State University). The collaboration aims to historicize and contextualize the significance of select communiqués of the Maya-Mam Saq Tx’otx’ Council and our struggles in defense of territory.
